And they stayed together, happy
Rooted in the belief that black protects children from the malevolent gaze of the evil eye, the work draws from traditions in which dark cloth, garments, or kohl markings serve as shields creating confusion and protection. In this series, the interplay of soft and coarse textiles woven, braided, and layered evokes both the tenderness and restlessness of childhood.
And they stayed together, happy continues the narrative first introduced in Running around mother, happy (2022), an ode to my mother and titled after a line from an Arabic lullaby she sang to us as children.
This new body of work shifts focus to the bond between siblings, reflecting on shared resilience and intimacy.
Created in 2025, the three pieces explore what it means to be one of three - to remain together, and to remain whole - through moments of adversity and care.
